Tussar silk, known for its natural gold sheen and textured feel, originates from the wild Tussar silkworms (Antheraea mylitta) found in the forests of Eastern India. Indigenous tribes in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha have reared these silkworms for centuries, collecting cocoons from host trees like Arjun and Asan. Tussar silk is prized for its unique texture and natural golden hue, with threads hand-spun and woven into beautiful fabrics. Bhagalpur, Bihar, became renowned for its intricate Tussar silk weaving. Despite challenges during British colonial rule, the craft survived and was revived post-independence with government support. Today, Tussar silk is celebrated for its eco-friendly production and is incorporated into contemporary fashion, reflecting the enduring artistry and heritage of its weavers.
